Closed Theories, Falsificationism and Non-Cumulative Progress

It is argued that scientific progress occurs not with the cumulative growth of knowledge or when theories get closer to the truth but with discovering new domains and new theories that fit these domains. This horizontal view on the direction of scientific progress (in contrast to vertical, when we aim to get from here to the abstract and ephemeral truth) allows avoiding traditional objections posed by the incommensurability thesis and pessimistic induction, namely, that radical theory changes leave no room for progress. Quantum deformation of the Poincare supergroup and kappa -deformed superspace

The classical $r$-matrix for $N=1$ superPoincar{\'e} algebra, given by Lukierski, Nowicki and Sobczyk is used to describe the graded Poisson structure on the $N=1$ Poincar{\'e} supergroup. The standard correspondence principle between the even (odd) Poisson brackets and (anti)commutators leads to the consistent quantum deformation of the superPoincar{\'e} group with the deformation parameter $q$ described by fundamental mass parameter $\kappa \quad (\kappa^{-1}=\ln{q})$. The $\kappa$-deformation of $N=1$ superspace as dual to the $\kappa$-deformed supersymmetry algebra is discussed.

Rotating electrons in quantum dots: Classical limit

We solve the problem of a few electrons in a two-dimensional harmonic confinement using a quantum mechanical exact diagonalization technique, on the one hand, and classical mechanics, on the other. The quantitative agreement between the results of these two calculations suggests that, at low filling factors, all the low energy excitations of a quantum Hall liquid are classical vibrations of localized electrons. The Coriolis force plays a dominant role in determining the classical vibration frequencies.
